Soft proofing allows pages to be proofed on a computer monitor. The process is not used for color accuracy but is intended for checking mechanical issues like type, position, size, angle, etc. (In unique instances where a high-quality display and system are in place, color could be reviewed and approved via soft proofing.) Remote proofing requires that a calibrated proofing device be physically installed at a customer site. This allows files to be transmitted from the vendor to the customer with the assurance of controlled proof output. Both proofing solutions require robust telecommunications as significant throughput is necessary for efficient file transfer. The installation, monitoring, and calibration of the equipment is also critical.

RR Donnelley is very experienced in both proofing technologies. When implemented as part of a total workflow redesign, soft proofing and remote proofing can greatly enhance the production process; creating lower page costs, reduced cycle time, fewer hard proofs per page, and easier communication between parties.

Soft Proofing
A benefit of the PDF workflow is the ability to do Soft or Virtual Proofing. By taking advantage of PDF file viewability, a publisher and printer can share proofs over the internet. Pricey express deliveries are replaced by immediate, low-cost electronic page transfers. Corrections and revisions can be indicated with “electronic pencils” for immediate comments from around the world.
